Just spent 30 days in Costa Rica, both the Caribbean Cost and the Pacific Coast. Loved the atmosphere the people and water. It’s a shame that it’s a 30 hour trip for me.
I’ve just stumbled over this film made by Ross Mclennan & Marty Schenk. It’s about Memmo Baleeira in Sagres, Portugal. Part of the global network over at www.designhotels.com Makes me so badly wanna go there and surf and hang out with wonderful friends.

We’ll some of you might already know that we love concrete here at WASF, this is not an exception. The building has a beautiful stretched x-shape and is drawn by Icelandic architect firm Arkís.

So next year, why not plan a trip to Iceland and Vatnajökull, it’s vast 8100 km² stretches over 8% of the land.

Allandale House is an A-frame(s) house for an idiosyncratic connoisseur and her family. Along with its occupants, the Allandale House also provides space for an eccentric collection of artifacts that resist straightforward classification. Wines, rare books, stuffed birds and an elk mount are among the relics on display in this small vacation house.
The house links three horizontal extrusions of “leaning,” or asymmetrical A-frames. The skinny A-frame on the western side contains the library, wine cellar and garage. The wide A-frame in the center of the house is dedicated to two floors of bedrooms and bathrooms. The medium A-frame on the eastern side consists of living, kitchen and dining areas. The house aims to undermine the seeming limitations of a triangular section by augmenting and revealing the extreme proportion in the vertical direction, and utilizing the acutely angled corners meeting the floor as moments for thickened walls, telescopic apertures and built-in storage.

This is a house to be built in Tokyo, for a movie producer couple.

This architecture is consisted by combining L-shaped blocks of reinforced concrete and sequential frames of box-shaped engineer-wood. We put bedrooms, film archive and galley in solid concrete part for security, and living room in engineer-wood part for openness. As material that consist an open space that is 6m in height, 5.5m in width, 14m in depth, we choose thin engineer-wood (38mmx287mm).

Main theme for this architecture is to bring out a sense of mass and material, which were denied by modern architecture which pursued “white, flat wall” as a style. We intentionally left the wood grain of mold on the surface of concrete, and choose textured stones and irons.

It goes without saying that a house is a relaxing place. A house like a white-cube, surrounded by flat, white walls everywhere, gives a person very abstract image. But that image could only be sensed when we use intellective part of our brain. The problem is that we’re not all-intellective-creature. For the people like this client, who do enough intellectual labor on a daily basis, white-cube would only bring sense of fatigue. The role of architecture, especially the ones for living, is to soothe the sensory side of people, not to stimulate the intellectual side.

French photographer Stéphane Chalmeau shared with us this 200 sqm house designed by Saison-Menu Architectes in a narrow site in Lille, France. It features a wooden first floor that merge with the exterior fence, and brown boxes-like volumes on the second floor, creating a wide terrace on top.

The site locates on mountainside of Izu-san, where Pacific Ocean can be looked down on the south. The untouched wilderness, covered with deciduous broad-leaved trees such as cherry trees and Japanese oaks, gives little level ground. But we saw faint glimmer of architectural possibility along the ridge. The architecture would be used as villa for weekends.

I didn’t want to just form the undulating landscape dotted with great trees as normal, nor design an elaborate architecture bowing down to the complex topography. What sprang to my mind is a blueprint for an architecture which is perfectly autonomous itself, at the same time seems to emerge as an underlying shape that the natural environment has been hiding. It’s abstraction of nature, to say. - words from the achitect.

The magnificent, streamlined residences must serve as an antidote of some sort to the Brazilian architect who has been quoted as saying that he loves his home town of São Paulo and New York because they are similar in their chaotic ugliness, and because he likes “energy, chaos and a multi-cultural population in a city.”

We like that they haved used the ground floor as a garage, if you don’t have a parking lot, why not take one of your floors and turn it into a parking space.

Arne Jacobsen designed this chair over a five-year period. Large, impressive, and extremely comfortable, when it was presented in 1966 it was met with surprise and admiration. “This is also how he can be: angular and with a touch of martial temperament that we could call Germanic or perhaps more properly Japanese in expression”
- Thau and Vindum, eds., Jacobsen.

Arne Jacobsen trained and practiced as an architect, and his evolution as a designer of furniture and objects was the consequence of his desire to achieve a complete harmony within his architectural projects. The range of his ideas is well-defined by two major projects in Copenhagen, those for the SAS Building (1955-1960), a hotel and air terminal, and for the National Bank of Denmark (1961-1971). The buildings reveal an evolution from the International Style minimalism of the SAS Building to a more expressive use of form in the National Bank. Here is the range of Jacobsen the designer, by instinct restrained, yet understanding the need to give character to his creations and ready to be a little playful, as with the anthropomorphic hints in his chair names.

Once again, Iwan Baan (complete photo set) amaze us with this great project between the woods by Spanish practice Selgas Cano: Their own architecture office. So this is my version of a future space home, i’m not sure where to place it yet, but I’ll figure something out.

I need to share this beautiful house with you, the house is located on Ireland. We like Ireland, and we love Dublin, a lot of music history has been written there. I want to believe that art and architecture knows no boundaries. And location dose not really matter, as long as the locations it self is beautiful or the item, house, art installation or whatever. However i really like this house, the lines, the bends, the abstract curves… I hope you will enjoy it as much as i did.

This is very traditional Japanese, you have a rather small living area of 102 m2, and a total building space of 85 m2. This is typical in Japan where there is not a lot of space for generous houses or apartments.

Some words from the Architects;
This house consists of box-space and roof-space. There are two bedrooms and bathroom in box-space, and there is storage (23.5 square meters) in an underground story. In roof-space, there are the entrance, kitchen and living room. The living room continues with the nature through an outside terrace.

The ground floor is space like the one-room of 78.5 square meters. In order to articulate this small space more attractively, box-space and roof-space are connected carefully.

The building is nestled into a sloping hill on the east, minimizing its presence on the site and orienting its long side toward the meadow to the west. The floor plan of the main volume steps up incrementally to follow the existing topographic contours of the site. The roof echoes the natural grading of the land, appearing as if the ground plane has been lifted to create a discrete shelter beneath it. The materials and color palette are similar to other residences in the area, known as Chechaquo Ranch, and are also intended to pick up colors in the surrounding vegetation and hills.

The house from Woody Allen’s Sleeper… Living in a sculpture

Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” (1973) had such elaborate sets and costumes that the film ran behind schedule and came in over budget, even though the final cost was still only $2 million. (more photos)

And today’s modern architecture, a villa in Almere, the Netherlands.

A just like the simplicity of this house, maybe a bit to minimalism for me but i like it.

The basic design is largely defined by the latitude enabled by the Dutch Building Decree. The maximum volume allowed on the particular location is 500 m³, while the residence plus office required 750 m³. Nowadays the Building Decree creates the opportunity to build up to 2.5 metres outside an external wall, without submitting a planning application under the condition that it does not border a public street or public park.

I like staircases, no, i LOVE staircases, they are beautiful they are inspiring, they are in a sort of movement… A staircase is something that you will go up and town many times and should fit in your life and your style. Many houses just have that old boring staircase that is made out of pine and has a pine handle and pine steps. But this staircase for example is partly floating and uses the desk in the end, and lets just put it this way, I love the way the architecture incorporated the staircase into the interior design, made it one with the room instead of a single element. I wanna fight a battle for the many different staircases out there, and do me a favor if you have a nice staircase that you have seen online put it in the comments and i’ll edit this post and stick it in there and ofcourse give the credit to whom ever found it!

Well my last weekend was spent in Stockholm, because we where going to look at the Sing and Songwriter Johan Örjansson at Mosebacke. But we did some other things to, spent a couple of hours zipping on some coffee latte’s and Chai tea. And we had an awesome sunday breakfast buffé at Café String on Södermalm.

One thing we did not do was to look after Bahnhof’s new office, The project takes place in a former 1200 square meter anti-atomic shelter. An amazing location 30 meters down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm.

The work made with big influence from the James Bond set designer Ken Adams and well i think it’s unbelievable beautiful and looks alot like the original bat cave. The entire build is a mash of my favorite textures and elements, Steel, Concrete, glass and rock. There is a very raw and futuristic feeling about this office and server location

Bahnhof thought that they needed to bring in natural elements and not just the rock and concrete. So they brought in moss and vegetive areas to make an more ECO friendly looking environment. Very futuristic. This is my very own little cave, and if i some day in the future build a house i think this will be a part of my inspiration, combined with other styles that i like.

Breathtaking… A house built more than a century ago, in a city that is larger than anything you can imagine. Completed in 1902, almost an 1800 house, 87 meters tall (almost 100 meters) with an 22 floor count. Witch gives each floor a total hight of 4 meters!! Thats what i call ceiling hight.

Flatiron in New York City

The Flatiron Building, which when constructed was called the Fuller Building, was one of the tallest buildings in New York City when completed. As you can see on the first photo the detail level on the facade is astonishing, the style is called Beaux Arts and you mainly know it by those high greek columns. But also when you dig deeper into Marvel comics and see all the structural building architecture you’ll notice the Beaux Art style.

A “Flatiron” copy found in Chicago

The Flatiron Building is frequently seen on TV in the opening of the The Late Show With David Letterman and it was used as the Daily Bugle building in the Spider Man films. I love the architectural style and find it calming in many ways, i try to find the core value in why i love the style, but can’t seem to know why. It’s just the level of detail and the hugh amount of effort it took Daniel Burnham to sketch and draw this magnificent building. This is another reason Why I think I Love New York, and the little house from Chicago, makes me believe that if you want to build and construct a house like this today, it’s very possible…. Maybe a mansion like that… in an urban environment.
