As SuperFamous Linus suns himself in Tenerife, there are another group of islands due south of the Islas Canarias that deserve some attention. Cabo Verde, a group of ten islands off the coast of West Africa are, like the Canaries, volcanic, but with a very different flavour. With a long colonial history, including a considerable involvement with the slave trade, the islands became independent from Portugal in 1975, and the country is now a democracy with big plans for trade and investment. The island of Sal is the only area to have seen any type of tourist development – yet. With major construction work going on, Cape Verde is going to be a magnet for tourism and property buyers. In fact, one story goes that the Cape Verdean government went to the Canaries, asked them what they did wrong when they were developing, so that they wouldn’t repeat the same mistakes! Go for the weather, the wind – this is a major windsurfing and watersports destination, the excellent seafood (go to Tradissom e Morabeza restaurant in Mindelo) and see it before everyone else finds out.
